History is the study of people and time. At Northbourne we believe that having a thorough knowledge of the past is vital if children are to have a thorough understanding of the world today. During their time at Northbourne children will have the opportunity to study famous historical people and events, great civilisations and compare the present with the past.
The study of History should be stimulating and enjoyable, as well as developing the children’s investigative and questioning skills. Children are encouraged to ask their own questions about what they are studying and use different resources in order to find the answers. To help children gain a full understanding of the time period they are studying many different resources are used. These include artefacts of everyday objects, photos and pictures of everyday objects and people, videos, timelines, computer programs and educational visits.
In Key Stage One children will compare life today with that of 100 years ago by investigating differences in homes, toys and seaside holidays. They will also study the life of Florence Nightingale and the Great Fire of London. Children will also consider what we are remembering on Remembrance Day.
In Key Stage Two children focus on broader time spans of History. They study the great civilisations of Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt or the Indus Valley and either the Romans, Vikings or Anglo-Saxons. Children investigate British History through studying the Tudors and life in Britain since 1939. They also have the opportunity to look at the local History of Didcot.
