INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL PHOTOS
On Friday 2nd October the school photographer will be in school for individual and sibling photos. If your child has a younger brother or sister not at school and you would like them to have a photograph together, please go to the school hall from 8.15 onwards. If you have more than one child at the school then they will have a ‘family photograph’ as well as individual ones during the school day.
ADMITTANCE TO NORTHBOURNE SCHOOL
We would like to remind you that if you have a child who was born between 1st September 2005 and 31st August 2006 they will be due to start school in September 2010 and their CAF form needs to be returned by 13th November 2009. An LEA booklet ‘Starting School’ which contains the CAF form can be obtained from the school office.
MOVING ON: TRANSFER TO SECONDARY SCHOOL IN SEPTEMBER 2010
Parents are reminded that the closing date for applying for a Secondary School place for your child in September 2010 is 2nd November 2009. It is essential that you make an application before the closing date, as if you submit a late application you may not be allocated one of your preferred schools.
OUTSTANDING WORK
Children throughout the school are continuing to work hard to meet their writing targets, which this term are based on using punctuation accurately. Children in year 1 are expected to use full stops correctly; by year 4, apostrophes should be used accurately in writing, and year 6 targets involve using a wide range of punctuation, including commas, semi-colons and dashes.
As part of the Eagle and Kite ‘Greece is the word’ topic, a pupil has written an outstanding myth about King Peteus and his warriors!...
“Bobetheus, the short fat warrior, stepped proudly onto the galleon that would take him over to face his enemy, the famously terrifying guardian. Frightened but proud, Bobetheus thought about its muscled body and its harsh, blood-thirsty whip, its horse-like legs and its hair. Lovingly, he looked into his pocket at what his girlfriend, the daughter of the ever-so-wise Mytheseus, the island wizard, had given him: a magic pebble and his favourite olive juice.”
It is great to see so many children working hard to meet both their maths and writing targets at the moment, and we hope to continue to be able to share these successes.
CYCLE SHELTER
It is currently difficult to get into the cycle shelter on some days, due to the way some bikes are being left. If you bring your child to school, can you please make sure that their cycle is placed into the shelter properly and locked up securely. Thank you for your help.
GARDENING CLUB
Please note that Gardening Club finishes at 4.00 pm. Thank you.
DIDCOT FOOD BANK
Last winter, many organisations and services in Didcot helped to establish an emergency food bank, which was run by Didcot Baptist Church. This community project was aimed at providing short-term relief to people and families in crisis through donations of food. As winter approaches again, the food bank is in need of donations of non-perishable food-stuffs. Currently, the bank has no stocks of coffee, hot beverages (like hot chocolate) or dried potato, but any food donations are welcomed. We would love to help this very worthwhile project. If you have any donations you can make, we will place a collection box in the school entrance and arrange for any items to be delivered. We hope you will be able to help; please speak to Mr. Shaughnessy if you would like any further information.
SOUTH OXFORDSHIRE MUSIC SCHOOL
Oxfordshire Music Service runs a Saturday morning Music School for pupils in the area. This is run during term-time at Wallingford School, from 9.30am – 12pm. A variety of ensembles are offered, catering for those who have been learning for just a term, right up to approximately grade 5 level, when pupils go on to Central Music School in Oxford. The groups range from choir to orchestra and from folk to jazz! If your child has county music service instrument lessons in school, there is no extra cost to join the Saturday school. In addition, as all pupils currently in year 3 will be learning to play the violin or cello in their music lessons this year, these children will also be able to take part for free from the start of January. Please call the Music Service for further details on 01865 740000, or email soms@lornawaters.co.uk.

The children can also choose from a wide variety of activities also available on a daily basis, such as art/craft, games, construction toys etc. We also provide sand/water play and playdough.
