NORTHBOURNE NEWS
Issue No: Seven
Date: 16th October 2009
The school closes at 3.00 pm on Friday 23rd October for the October Holiday. We re-open on Monday 2nd November.
HARVEST THANK YOU
We would like to say thank you very much for all of the harvest festival food donations which we received throughout last week. We had a fantastic response and have donated the items you all sent in to Didcot Food Bank, who were absolutely thrilled to receive such a large donation. They asked the school to pass on their thanks for the food, which will help families in need from across the town.
It was also great to see so many parents and family members at the church for our harvest service. Thank you for making the time to celebrate with us.
KEY STAGE 1 NEWS
Pupils (and staff!) had a fabulous time on their Great Fire of London day on Wednesday. Walking through school was a little bit like going back in time thanks to the brilliant costumes which everyone was wearing. We would like to thank parents and family members who worked so hard on these outfits, which really helped children get into role; as a result of this, children have already produced some fantastic writing.
A child in Nightingale class wrote an outstanding diary in character as Samuel Pepys. This piece of work helped him show that he has already met his target for the term - to use full stops correctly at least half of the time. In fact, his diary was so good that he has actually almost achieved the target for the next year group: to use full stops and accurate capital letters!
“Sunday 2nd September 1666
One early morning my maid woke me up because there was a great fire started. Suddenly I heard a scream in Thomas Farynor’s bakery on Pudding Lane. The flames were ferocious to me. I got worried because I saw houses crushed to the ground. I got so worried that I buried my cheese and wine in my garden.”
Luckily, his diary goes on to show that Samuel Pepys was able to find his cheese and wine in the garden later, when the fire was finished !
Please note that the Key Stage 1 Christmas Play will take place at 9.30am and 6pm on Tuesday 8th December. Further information will follow after half term.
HALF-TERM ACTIVITIES
As well as our holiday club, Neighbourhood Kids, being available for use over the half-term, Cornerstone Arts Centre are also running a programme of events and courses. These range from drawing and painting to dance, and are taking place throughout the week. Details of both of these programmes are available on the homepage of our school website: http://northbourne-school.org.uk/
HEADLICE
There are cases of headlice in several classes across the school. Can you please make sure that you check your child’s hair carefully over the next week, and use appropriate treatment if necessary.
CLUB NEWS
Due to parent consultations, we will be unable to run netball and international clubs on Tuesday 3rd November, and ICT club on Wednesday 4th November. Unfortunately, due to a staff INSET meeting, netball and international clubs will also not take place on Tuesday 10th November. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.
However, Miss Hill would like to run a replacement netball club on Wednesday 11th November, to help the team practice before their match the following week. If your child is unable to make this re-arranged date, please let Miss Hill know in advance.
SCHOOL COUNCIL
The school council have been consulting their classes to find out whether more pupils wanted to fund-raise for Children in Need or the Blue Peter Operation Smile appeal this year. Their feedback showed that most children wanted to raise money for Blue Peter, and the council are now talking through what events to run. More details will follow shortly.
ECO EVENT AT DGS
Mrs. McIntyre and Mr. Taylor took eight children to Didcot Girls’ School on Thursday to attend their first ever eco conference. The children were chosen for their commitment and enthusiasm shown in gardening club or on the eco committee, and were able to take part in a wide range of different eco activities, from making a rain forest in a bag and a bug hotel, to making eco-friendly gift bags. The children then put some of our pond water into the new DGS pond, to formally declare it open. Thanks to all of the children for behaving so brilliantly and representing Northbourne so well, and to Mr. Taylor for sparing the time to help.
LOST PROPERTY
We have a lot of lost property in school at the moment. Please spare a few minutes to pop in and check the Lost Property Box, near Kingfisher Room, for any items that you may have lost throughout this term.
PET SERVICE AT ST PETER'S CHURCH
There will be a pet service at St Peter's Church at 3.00pm on Sunday 18th October. Any kind of pet (and their owners) are all welcome. Refreshments for pets and owners will be provided after the service. For more information call 01235 812114.
EXPLORER DOME
We are hoping to have the explorer dome in school on November 5th and 6th, to develop learning in science. We have managed to keep the cost the same as last year, £3.10, by amalgamating classes together, and hope you will be able to support this event.
