Homework

Homework will be given out from the week commencing 22nd September.

Home learning projects, which we trialled last year, will continue to be given.  Pupils will usually have around a month to complete these extended pieces of work,  and these will be exhibited during our end-of-topic event.

Maths

We will set maths homework on Thursday, due back on Monday.  We are both happy to help with any homework pupils do not quite understand – they can speak to us at either break- or lunch-time, or after school.  The homework will obviously link closely to class work, so pupils should be able to explain this to you themselves.  We appreciate that some of the maths methods pupils use in school are very different to how we were all taught, and would suggest that you try to ask your child to explain to you how we have been working in class first.  Of course, if they are confident with the methods we have been using, then they would probably find it interesting to compare this to a different method.

In addition, pupils should know all times tables, both as multiplication and division facts, by the end of year 4.  This is an area of whole-school focus this year.  If your child does not know all of their tables, please help us by helping them learn these.  There are some excellent internet sites to use, or you could set your child a different fact to learn each day and test them throughout the day!

Literacy

Pupils should read for at least 5 minutes each evening in year 5 and 6.  This is important, as it has been shown to affect both reading fluency and comprehension, but also writing ability.  ‘Reading’ includes a wide-range of printed materials, including sports pages in newspapers, comics, magazines etc.  Please encourage your child to read as widely as possible, and to record this in the reading diaries which they will be given shortly, to help us keep track of their progress.

In addition, pupils have a spelling rule to learn each week, and a set of spellings which follow this rule.  These are given out on Monday and tested on Friday.  Pupils have time to practice these in class, and should also bring them home to look at.
