Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)

As a school, we follow the Smile Again scheme of work.  This is a comprehensive and coherent scheme, beginning with the Foundation Stage and progressing through to Year 6.  It covers 'Healthy Lifestyles' - learning about looking after ourselves, our family and friends and the community and environment around us.  It also deals with 'Sensitive Issues' such as drugs, keeping safe and relationships - all at age appropriate levels.

Northbourne has an active School Council, which meets twice a month.  The council members are voted on by their peers, and all children are encouraged to pass on suggestions for improving the school to their class representatives.  Some of the issues that the children have raised in the past include recycling and composting, which now occur throughout the school; blinds for classrooms to allow the smartboards to be used productively in all weather; the creation of the pond and wildlife area and they have met with the school cook to work on healthy meal options.  The children take great pride in being on the School Council and take their responsibility very seriously.

Northbourne is also working towards achieving the 'Healthy Schools Award' and the 'Eco-Schools Award'.  With regard to the Eco-Schools Award, we work very closely with the Northmoor Trust, particularly with Annie Cousins who regularly comes into school to teach the children about a variety of topics from reducing our rubbish to paper making.
