At Northbourne we want to all children to enjoy participating in physical education and develop a positive attitude towards fitness and healthy lifestyles as well as developing their skills in specific sports and sporting attitudes.
The Curriculum
We follow the National Curriculum guidelines on Physical Education and use the QCA exemplar units of work as a basis for our PE scheme of work. We make sure all children receive a balanced curriculum so they can find a sport or discipline they really enjoy and can develop their skills in, or excel in.
Dance

Children use pictures, video clips, topics, music and moods as a stimulus for creating short or long dances individually or in groups. Children learn how to use their body, and the shapes it can make, to represent moods and feeling. Children also find out about dances from other cultures.
Gymnastics
Children learn how to control their body, developing balance, flexibility and strength, using the floor and apparatus to perform sequences.

Games
Children develop sending and receiving, striking and fielding skills through a range of games and activities. Children are taught how to participate in teams and the value of cooperation and teamwork. In KS2 children learn how to defend and invade spaces in games such as netball, basketball, tag rugby, football, hockey, cricket and rounders.
Swimming
All children in KS2 attend swimming lessons at the local swimming pool the Didcot Wave.
Athletics and Outdoor activities
Throughout the school term the children use the school grounds to take part in outdoor activities. In the summer and autumn terms children take part in athletics events, building stamina, strength and accuracy in running, throwing and jumping.
Clubs
Children can attend a range of sporting clubs. We have successful football, cricket, athletics, swimming, rounders and netball teams which regularly reach finals and semi finals in tournaments. We are looking forward to the start of our tag rugby club in the spring term 2006. For children who do not want to take part in competitive sports we have games club and 'wake and shake'.
